Cretan Sea Life Amphora 1500's bc, 12"
Tall x 10" Wide Item #V38
The Sea Life Amphora is typical of the Minoan
Marine Style amphoras from Crete and Santorini created
between 1700 and 1450 b.c. The Minoans, precursors of the Greeks (Mycenaean), occupied the
islands
of Crete and Santorini, as well as having colonies and settlements in Asia Minor and
possibly on the
central Mediterranean coasts as well. This amphora shape is known as a pithos,
characterized by the
center being rounder and larger than both the mouth and the base, and the stirrup handles
at the shoulder.
Pithoi were used for storage and transport, with giant pithoi found in the storerooms of
the Palaces on
Crete.
This vase depicts octopus, dolphins, nautili, seaweed, and jellyfish in free movement,
seemingly
swimming around the curved planes of the vase. Minoan pottery stood out for the
characteristic of not
having zones of painting. Later, Geometric and then Classical art divided the vases into
zones, where the
painting had restricted borders, and the art appeared more static. On this vase however,
creatures seem
to spring out of the sea bed, represented by the vegetation growing around the base of the
vase. One can
almost see the seaweed swaying with the tide.
Nature is a common theme in Minoan vase and fresco painting, as evidenced in the numerous
octopus amphoras found, as well as the subjects of dolphins, monkeys, antelopes, swallows
and lilies painted on walls in Akrtotiri and Knossos. The realistic depictions of these
figures allow us
to surmise that the Minoans were in close and frequent contact with nature, and indeed
appreciated its decorative beauty, as they also appreciated the beauty of the human form
and decorated it with bangles, jewels and elaborate hairstyles.
